Horse training on hold - April 3, 2010

Well I am taking the summer off from horse training. Well, except for Czar (and Charlie)! I will be continuing their training by taking them penning this summer! So watch for more posts later this summer of how they are doing.

Thanks for taking the time to read the blogs!

Have a great summer!

Torque - April 3, 2010

Torque is now a gelding!
His training went great. Courtney has been riding him for the past few weeks and decided she was ready to continue his training on her own. So he has now gone home.
Torque is a great horse. Very athletic and quick. He was a great horse to teach Courtney the do's and dont's of training a wild horse!
I'm sure she will have a great time riding this summer!

Charlie - April 3, 2010

Well I think the last post on Charlie was I was taking him to the Armstrong Auction. Well ... I didn't sell him! He is just too nice of a horse to "let go", so I brought him home and have continued his training. He really is a great horse.

I have him posted on Equine Now and he is for sale for $2000. If you are interested in Charlie, please give me a call.

Titan - April 3, 2010

Titan has been sold. His new owner, Michelle, is on her way as I am writing this to pick him up.
Good luck, Michelle. Hope Titan is all you hope for.
Titan has only been halter broke at this point so Michelle will find another trainer where she lives to finish his training.

Torque - 4 year old stud

Torque is a 4 year old stud that I brought home on February 21st. He belongs to Courtney, who I am teaching how to work with/train a wild horse. Torque has been haltered, trained to lead, has accepted the saddle pad and saddle, and also I am now able to put some weight in the stirrups. The next thing will be to actually put weight in the saddle, after which he will be ready to being his training as a saddle horse!

More pictures of Torque's training will be posted soon.

Titan - 3 year old blue roan

Titan is a 3 year old blue roan stud. He has been running wild and free for the past 3 years and it is now time for him to be trained. I brought him home on February 21st (along with Torque, a 4 year old stud who is also being trained - will post blog on him) and have been working with him in the round pen, halter breaking and learning to accept the saddle pad.

Saturday, March 6, 2010

Well today is the day. It's March 6th, Charlie has had 30 days training and is doing great, and we are off to the Armstrong Auction. Will post the results when we get home.

Tuesday, February 23, 2010

Charlie has now had 3 weeks training as of today. I took him to the outside round pen for his first ride "outdoors". Then the next day we were back in the barn and after playing with the ball and doing some warm up, Courtney decided it was her turn to ride him! She is learning how to train these wild colts so has been helping out with Charlie for the past couple of weeks. As you can see, Charlie accepted a new rider with no problems. Hope you enjoy the video.

Penticton Bullarama 2010

Okay, this has nothing to do with horse training, but here's what cowboys do when they aren't training horses. The first bullrider is a friend of mine, Chad Eneas. He didn't make the 8 seconds ... this time! Better luck next time, Chad.

Czar - February 18, 2010 movie of training

Czar has been here for 4 days and I am having to ease him into the training due to the fact that he is quite out of shape.

Czar - February 18, 2010

Czar has now been here for 4 days. As he is so out of shape, I am taking it slow with him. He has "buddied" up with Charlie (the buckskin I am training) so I turned them out together to run and play to help "leg" him up.

Czar - Registered Quarterhorse February 14, 2010

Czar is a registered Quarterhorse (Bonanza and Good Deal Doc). He is 12 years old. I trained him approximately 5 years ago when he was 7 years old. He is now 12 and has not been ridden since I trained him. He is back to be "trained" again. He actually remembers a lot of his training, but I am starting him again with the basics.
His owner bought him when he was 8 months old and he has been well cared for ... more of a pet than anything, but now he needs to do what he was bred for ... chase cows and be a "working" quarterhorse.

Charlie February 10, 2010

All saddled up and ready to ride.

One of the first rides. Charlie is very willing and catches on fast to what I want him to do.

Riding in the barn. Charlie is figuring out that he now has to listen to the rider on his back. He has been getting his commands from the ground all this time!

Day 7 - putting weight in the saddle

Charlie February 4, 2010

Charlie out in the pen. I put him in with our other 2 geldings so he has some company.

Charlie February 2, 2010

Charlie is a 5 year old buckskin gelding. I got him on February 2, 2010. He had been halter broke but that was all.

I brought him home, let him get settled in for a few hours and then began his training.

I led him into the barn, his first "barn" experience, and then introduced him to the saddle pad, saddle and bosal.

Charlie is a very quick learner!!!

Roman

Roman was a 4 year old pinto gelding raised on the Penticton Reserve. Two Buck (his owner) raises bucking horses and Roman was "tested" in the bucking chute, but he just didn't have the will to buck. So once again, Two Buck asked if I thought he might make a good saddle horse. He seemed to have the right "eye" so I brought him home and began working with him.

Roman was a pretty nervous horse. He was low in the herd, which means the other horses had been bossing him around his whole life, so I had to get his trust first.

After a week of ground work, getting him to accept the saddle pad, saddle and bosal and learning to lunge, I began riding him.

Roman was sold after 30 days of training.

Two Penny - 3 year old pinto mare

Two Penny is a 3 year old pinto mare off the Penticton Reserve. She had never had any human contact ... lived out there wild and free for the first 3 years of her life. When her owner (Two Buck) caught her she had a 6 month old baby at her side. She was quite the handful. Two Buck raises bucking horses and Two Penny just didn't have the build or the "eye" to be a bucking horse.

We kept her baby for the first couple of weeks, but got him weaned off her and then he was sold to a good home.

When I brought her home she was very skittish and didn't want to be touched. I finally got her haltered, let her settle in for a day, and then began training her.

Within a week I had her accepting the saddle pad, saddle and bosal. I train all my horses using a bosal.

After having Two Penny in training for 25 days, I loaded her in the horse trailer and took her out chasing cows! She has been sold now and I hope her new owners are enjoying working with her. As with any green broke horse, all she needs now is time and miles!
